It may be hard to believe but winter will be coming one of thOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAese days. While we haven’t been hit by the frigid temperatures or snow yet, we can almost promise that it will roll in sooner rather then later. With cold temperatures, ice, and snow on the horizon, it’s helpful to review some winter driving tips.

Oil Check: Look through your owners manual for specific oil changes. The conditions in which you drive and the car you own will vary how frequent your car oil needs to be changed.

Check Your Battery: The cold can be extremely harsh on a car’s battery. If your battery is more then three years old, we suggest having a professional take a look at it for you.

Consider Winter Tires: Uneven tire pressure can reduce your car’s gas mileage, cut back on traction and can cause uneven tread wear. We suggest having your tires rotated around every 5,000 to 7,500 miles and have your tire pressure check every month(especially in the winter).

Lights: Your car lights are as important then ever during the winter, not just for seeing through the dark, and dreary conditions but for also allowing other cars to see you while on the road. Before you drive, clear off any debris from your headlights and make sure they are working properly

Winter emergency kit: During the winter, it’s safe to say that anything can happen while on the roads. Getting stuck in the snow is more common then you might think, so we recommend packing some essential items:

  • Battery jumper cables
  • Your Cell Phone and a car phone charger charger
  • Non-perishable food items such as water, sports drinks and energy bars.
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • First-aid kit, winter clothing and snow gear and blankets. Bring the same clothes you would need if going sledding outside.
  • If stuck in the snow, kitty litter or sand will help you get out
  • A snow shovel, and a snow brush/ice scrapper.

In the event of an emergency, each of these items will make your life a whole lot easier. If you develop a car issue this winter and need help, please feel free to give us a call at 617-364-1722 or fill out a contact form.
